Overview

As a supplement to the standard immersion program, LILN offers students the chance to do an independent study project (ISP).  There are many directions in which students can focus their research thanks to Latin America´s rich history, people and culture.  You may choose to study Argentine politics, research Chile's public health system or follow the history the Mapuche.

A thorough and accurate project investigation requires that you dedicate yourself completely to the project, meaning you must immerse yourself fully into the Latin culture and take advantage of all types of resources, not just those found in the public library.  This could include interviews with natives, trips outside the city and visits to organizations related to your field of study.

A good way to earn credit for multiple courses is to combine your independent study with Spanish courses.  For example over an eight week period, you might complete the equivalent of Intermediate Spanish 301, 302 and an Independent Study on the Argentina economy.

Requirements

There are no set requirements of the method of research, just the dedication to seriously investigate a topic of interest.  You will however, meet with a professor or a member of the administration throughout the duration of your research.  These meetings are for your benefit, as they are an opportunity to get advice and help, and ensure that you continue making progress as the project goes on.  In addition to acting as a tutor, the professor or administrator will be evaluating you on your effort and how much you accomplish, and may also serve as an added resource in your investigation.

Example Topics

  • a study of the history of the Mapuche people leading up to the contemporary Mapuche living in Chile today
  • a comparison of Chilean and Argentine art (or other Latin American art)
  • the Chilean political system and the effects on society including research on the dictatorship of Pinochet
  • a study of Chilean literature (might include comparison to peninsular literature)
  • an investigation of economic infrastructure.
Procedure

A separate Independent Study Project Proposal sheet must be sent to LILN at least 1 month prior to the start date of classes.  The proposal is made up of a clear description of your topic of research and a signature of approval by a representative of your home institution.  The research topic must be approved by your home institution before arrival.

Costs

The price for an independent study varies with your contact requirements.  Typically students will request 5-10 contact hours per week with a member of our staff. These contact hours are priced as private lessons supplemental to your normal course.
