Huelva:
The history of Huelva begins
several centuries before the birth of Christ. Vestiges of Tartessian
culture, the original inhabitants of the Odiel River bed, can still be
seen. The city of Niebla is a perfect example of the Roman and Medieval
legacy of the province, which years later would fall into the hands of
the Moors. As well, the long history of Huelva stretches all the
way to Latin America. The Genovese navigator Christopher Columbus
began his journey here in Huelva from the Puerto de Palos de la Frontera,
having taken refuge in the monastery of La Rabida, whilst waiting for the
favor of Queen Isabel I of Castile. Today, is is possible to visit
an impressive historical museum that contains replicas of the famous carabelas.
The city of Huelva (also known as “la marinera”) is considered the home
of Columbus’s journey and boasts of a long-connected history with Latin
America.
