Barbara has worked with us as a student intern for six months, splitting time between Buenos Aires and Santiago.  Let's see what she has to say about her experience....

Latin Immersion:  Who are you?
Barbara: My name is Barbara, I am 26 years old. I am from Germany. I studied Business Management with the main focus on tourism.

Latin Immersion: What are you doing here?
Barbara: I am studying at a language school in Santiago in the morning and in the afternoons I taking part in the intern programme. My work includes translations into German and more generally I do some Marketing for the German market.

Latin Immersion:  Where have you learned Spanish?
Barbara: First I was at the school in Buenos Aires for 6 weeks and now I am at the school in Santiago. I love both schools. The teachers are very nice and good -the school is fantastic. Both cities are amazing. Of course they are very different but both have their own charm. Buenos Aires with its European influence and Santiago a modern metropolis. There are a lot of things to do in the city and its surroundings. I spent a couple of weekends at the beach, which is only 2 hours away from Santiago. I also went to the North and to the South and I found it stunning.

Latin Immersion:  Why did you choose Chile to be an intern and to learn Spanish?
Barbara: This Question is not easy to answer. But there are some countries in the world, which are not wellknown, but I have heard there are beautiful! Chile is one! My dream was: to go to Chile.
And for me it’s important not only to travel in a country but also to live and to work there, because you can make local friends, live with a local family or with other locals. For example I live in an apartment with an African guy, with two Chileans and another student from Australia. This is also very interesting, because differentes cultures meet each other. Sometimes we watch TV together or we talk or we go together to a party.

Latin Immersion:  What do you think about the Spanish from the Argentineans and the Spanish from the people in Chile?
Barbara: The Argentinean pronunciation is much better then the Chilean. In Argentina instead of “tu” they use “vos”  and they pronounce the “ll” as “sch”. The Chileans (of course not the teachers) pronunciation is not very clear. They change the letters at the end of a word and speak very quickly. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating but I think that once you are able to understand them you can understand anybody in a Spanish speaking country. That’s why it’s great to study Spanish here.

Latin Immersion:  For how long will you stay here? And what are your plans after you have finished your internship.
Barbara: I will have finished at the end of March. After that I will go travelling in the North and the South of Chile and after that I don’t know! I don’t have any specific plans. Maybe I will stay in this country which I love or I will work in Spain or I don’t know. We will see!

Latin Immersion:  ¿Cuéntanos, quién eres tu?
Barbara: Mi nombre es Barbara, tengo 26 años. Soy de Alemania y estudié allá economía con especialización en turismo.

Latin Immersion:  ¿ Qué haces tú aquí?
Barbara: Soy estudiante de esta escuela en Santiago en la mañana y soy interna aquí en la tarde. Mi trabajo incluye traducciones en alemán, y generalmente cosas de Marketing para el mercado alemán.

Latin Immersion:  ¿Dónde has aprendido español?
Barbara: Primero fui por 6 semanas a la escuela en Buenos Aires y ahora estoy en la escuela en Santiago.
Me encantan ambas escuelas. Los profesores son agradables, buenos, y todo en la escuela es muy buena honda. Las ciudades son ambas increíbles. Por supuesto  son diferentes, pero cada una tiene su propio encanto. Buenos Aires con sus influencias europeas y Santiago, una metrópoli muy moderna. Hay muchísimas cosas que hacer en las ciudades y alrededores. Por ejemplo pasé algunos fines de semanas en la playa, solamente 2 horas de Santiago. También fui al Norte y al Sur y lo encontré hermoso.

Latin Immersion:  ¿Porqué elegiste Chile para ser una interna y aprender español?
Barbara: Esta pregunta no es fácil de contestar. Pero hay algunos países en el mundo, que no son muy conocidos, pero escuché que son hermosos. Chile es uno de ellos.  Tenía un sueño; ir a Chile. Además para mi es importante no solamente viajar por un país sino también vivir o trabajar allá porque puedes hacer amigos locales, o vivir con una familia. Yo vivo por ejemplo en un departamento con un africano, con dos chilenos y con otra alumna australiana de la escuela. Eso es también muy interesante, porque se encuentran culturas diferentes. Algunas veces miramos la televisión juntos o hablamos o vamos a una fiesta juntos.

Latin Immersion:  ¿ Qué te parece el español de Argentina y el español de Chile?
Barbara: Definitivamente los argentinos pronuncian más claro que los chilenos. Aún ellos en lugar de tú tienen “vos” y el ll se pronuncian como “sch” . Los Chilenos (por supuesto sin contar a los profesores) pronuncian muy mal.
Cambian las letras al final de una palabra y hablan muy rápido. Algunas veces es un poquito frustrante, pero creo que cuando los entiendes a ellos puedes entenderlos a todos en los países donde se habla español. Por eso es un buen ejercicio aprender español aquí.

Latin Immersion:  ¿Cuánto tiempo más vas a estar aquí? ¿Y cuáles son tus planes después que tú termines con tu internado?
Barbara: Habré terminado a fines de marzo. Después voy a viajar por un mes en el sur y en el norte de Chile y después no sé. No tengo planes específicos. Quizás me quede en este país el cual me encanta o voy a trabajar en España o no sé. Vamos a ver.
