Marie has recently moved to Buenos Aires from Sweden.  This often overwhelming transition included the necessity of learning Spanish.  Marie describes how the school helped her adjustment.

Barbara: Who are you? Where are you from, what did you study, how old are you... 
Marie:  Marie Grafstrom, from Stockholm Sweden, Before coming here I studied psychology at the University of Westminster in London where I lived for 6,5 years. As a part time job I worked with children with autism.

Barbara:  Why have you decided to go to Buenos Aires? 
Marie:   Boyfriend from Argentina 

Barbara:  How did you meet your boyfriend? 
Marie:  We met at work... I was working part-time for a telecommunications company (also in London) and we met there. 

Barbara:  Was it a big step for you to leave Europe and start a new Life in Argentina? Can you tell me what you thought or how you felt?
Marie:   I don’t think I realized how big of a step until I came here and understood that this is a very different world. I have moved around quite a bit and I adjust easily. I thought it was exciting to move to a new country, learn a new language etc. And I was lucky to have met Barbara and others at the school. But I did feel I was going far away from my family and friends. But I didn't realize all this until I was already here.

Barbara:  Did you know any Spanish before you came to Latin America? And the swedish people, do many of them learn Spanish?
Marie:   Not really, well a few words and I had some understanding. A lot of people in Sweden learn Spanish in school, most people learn two languages, English and another language. 

Barbara:  Do you practice Spanish with your boyfriend or do you still speak English with him? 
Marie:  English mostly, it's because it's easier and he needs a lot of patience to speak Spanish with me. I talk a lot and in Spanish it's slower. 

Barbara:  What do you think about Argentina and the City Buenos Aires? The nightlife? How are the people in Buenos Aires? Are they friendly, open and welcome? 
Marie:  I think people are very friendly and helpful. They are generally very interested in where you're from etc. And obviously what you think about their country. I guess not a lot of people can afford to travel which maybe makes them more interested. As with every place not everyone is friendly. The usual stress of a big city exists here aswell.  I really like BA although it would be better with less pollution. The nightlife, as you know Barbie, is great. There are things that I don't like, poverty, corruption, and basically social problems. 

Barbara:  How long have you been here and what are you doing? 
Marie:  I've been here for 5 months and at the moment I'm recovering from my holiday. I studied at the school for a couple of months. I'm trying to look for a job, but the situation here is not the easiest so we'll see. 

Barbara:  Did the school help you to feel at home? 
Marie:  Definitely, Diana, the all teachers and all the students, everyone, I'm so glad that I found this school because all these people made my first months in BA so easy and so much fun. 

Barbara:  With what is going on in Argentina, Do you feel really unsafe? Do you think you will stay here, or are you planning to go somewhere else? 
Marie:  A lot of things are happening but I don't feel unsafe. Everything that is happening is very sad, people are very desperate. It's all very complicated and I only know a bit of the history etc. I think the problem at the moment is that no matter who is in power there is just no money in this country. I don't know what will happen or for how long we'll stay. But with the devaluation it is hard to travel and that's one of the things we want to do. I want to go to Sweden and visit, but the way things are at the moment that would be extremely expensive. We'll see I would like to stay, I still have a lot to learn about the culture and country.

Barbara: ¿Quién eres tú? 
Marie:  Marie Grafstrom, de Estocolmo Suecia. Antes de llegar aquí ( Buenos Aires) estudié psicología en la Universidad de Westminister en Londres, donde viví por seis años y medio y trabajé con niños autistas.

Barbara:  ¿Porqué decidiste ir a Buenos Aires? 
Marie:  Tengo un novio Argentino.

Barbara:  ¿Cómo lo conociste? 
Marie:  Nos encontramos en el trabajo... Yo trabajé para una empresa de telecomunicaciones en Londres  y nos conocimos allá.

Barbara:  ¿Fue un paso grande irse de Europa y comenzar una nueva vida en Argentina? Cuéntame qué pensabas o qué sentías. 
Marie:  No pense el gran paso que daba hasta que llegué aquí y entendí que es un mundo muy diferente. Cambié bastante y me ajusté fácilmente.  Pensé que sería excitante cambiarme a un nuevo país, aprender un nuevo idioma etc. Y tuve suerte  de haber  encontrado a Barbara y a otros de la escuela....pero sentí que estaba yendo muy lejos de mi familia y mis amigos. Pero no lo entendí hasta que ya estaba  aquí.

Barbara:  ¿Aprendiste español antes de ir a Latino América? ¿Y los suecos , hay muchos que aprenden español? 
Marie:  No, no realmente, bueno, sabía unas palabras y entendía algo, Muchas personas en Suecia aprenden español en la escuela, la mayoría aprenden dos idiomas en la escuela.

Barbara:  ¿Practicas español con tu novio o todavía hablas en inglés con él?
Marie:  La  mayor parte en inglés por que es más fácil y el necesita una gran paciencia para hablar en español conmigo . Hablo muchísimo y en español soy más lenta.

Barbara:  ¿Qué piensas sobre  Argentina y Buenos Aires? ¿La vida nocturna? ¿Cómo es la gente en Buenos Aires? ¿Es amable y cálida?
Marie:   Creo que la gente es amable y servicial. Generalmente ellos están muy interesados en saber de dónde eres etc. Obviamente quieren saber lo que tú piensas sobre su país. Creo que la mayoría no puede viajar, lo que provoca que ellos estén más interesados en saber lo que sucede en otros lugares, que no todo el mundo es amable ....El estrés corriente de una ciudad grande existe aquí también. Realmente Buenos Aires me gusta mucho y aún sería mejor con menos contaminación. Cómo tú sabes, Bárbara la vida nocturna es maravillosa. Hay cosas que a  mi no me gustan como la pobreza, corrupción, básicos problemas sociales.

Barbara:  ¿Hace cuanto tiempo estás aquí y que estás haciendo? 
Marie:  Yo estoy aquí hace 5 meses y en este momento estoy  recobrándome de mis vacaciones. Estoy intentando buscar un trabajo pero la situación aquí ahora no es fácil. Entonces vamos a ver.

Barbara:  ¿ La escuela te ayudó a sentirte como en casa?
Marie:  Definitivamente, Diana (la directora) , todos los profesores y todos los alumnos, todo. Estoy feliz por que encontré la escuela y por que todos   hicieron mis primeros meses en Buenos Aires muy fáciles y divertidos.

Barbara: Sobre lo que está pasando en Argentina. ¿Te sientes insegura? ¿Pienses que te quedarás aquí, o tienes planes de ir a otro lugar? 
Marie: Hay muchas cosas que pasan pero no me siento insegura. Todas las cosas que pasan son muy tristes..la gente está desesperada. Todo es muy complicado y solamente sé un poco de la historia. Creo que el problema no es sobre quienes tienen  la autoridad, es solamente que no hay dinero en el país. No sé lo que va a pasar o por cuanto tiempo vamos a quedarnos. Pero con la devaluación  es muy duro viajar y eso es una de las cosas que queremos hacer.  Quiero ir a Suecia, pero como están las cosas ahora sería demasiado caro. Vamos a ver. Me gustaría quedarme. Todavía tengo que aprender mucho sobre la cultura y el país.
